The symbol of London, Tower Bridge is a low-level bascule bridge, openable for ship traffic, with a high-level walkway above. The original lifting mechanism was a steam-driven hydraulic system. Here this road bridge being raised in order to allow a ship to pass along the River Thames. Construction commenced in 1886 and was completed in 1894.
